The adventure started on a high, we left at 7am on the dot, well it was 6:59 but I hovered so that we could leave on time. The car rolled off the drive and the warning light for the tyres came on and told me to inflate them. The one thing I forgot to do the night before. The first garage we came to had a machine that was out of order, I drove to the to next and as I grabbed my wallet I split my thumb nail on the door. I took these as bad omens... but not really. Finally, and only after 15 minutes we were on the M25. It was pretty much plain sailing and then onto the M3, we stopped at Fleet for a break and some breakfast, Lucas was starving. We got back on the road and didn't hit any traffic until Devon???I should point out that this was the first day of the summer holiday and a lot of the population heads west on this day, including us.
Another stop at Exeter services for stretch and a drink and then on with only an hour or so to go. Finding the campsite wasn't that difficult, it was at the bottom of a village on a large hill in a farmers field but to our horror, it was extremely basic. There was one portaloo for women and one for men, that's it, no showers, no washing up station and a tap for running water. If you turned up with a campervan, with all of your own facilities, this would be perfect. The scenery was beautiful and the field well kept. The pitches were flat and grass low, it was clear it was well looked after, it was just not for us. Since I had paid for 3 nights, not a lot I might add and I realise why now, I sat in the car with good(ish) phone reception and found us another campsite on 'pitchup'. It was 20 minutes away and had showers and looked clean from the photos. When we arrived I nearly crashed into the entrance as it was on a steep hill and at a 45 degree turn, so we slid down luckily didn't hit anything. We had pitch 4 not too bad and probably a little too small for our tent but we made do. It is a cute site with an amazing view of the valley it sits on and a small view of the sea to the right. The showers were clean and warm and it had a washing area and two fire pits. The only problem we were situated in between a group of young people/ adults who were in full blown party mode and England were playing that night. We are used to a site with a noise curfew, well I am, it doesn't seem to bother Lucas.
For the evenings entertainment, we headed off to Newquay and we wished we didn't, it is a hole. It appears run down with loads of crappy fish and chips shops, we ended up at the kebab house and that was bad enough. The clientelle looked liked they were going to beat us up and, that concluded our evening there around 8pm. We were both tired at this point, back at the campsite we built a fire and sat around drinking hot chocolate. That was day 1.
On the second day, Cornwall said 'Let there be mist' and there was, the ground was damp and I felt like our luck was both in keeping with our Cornish adventures and had run out with the weather. Not true. After 20 minutes the mist cleared, the sun came out and the warmth returned.
Once we had got ourselves sorted out and ready, we headed off for a 15 minute drive to Camel creek for the day. Firstly it ended up being 30 minutes because I took 3 wrong turns and then after 2 and a half hours we had done everything in the park. We left and went back to the campsite and hung out for the afternoon. We had our famous(to us) campsite curry and that was amazing. Since we were so close to the beach, we headed down the hill for a walk along the sand. Lucas got soaked and and I paddled and moaned at him for getting me wet, we bought a football to kick around. To end the day a decision was made to have a campfire with marshmallows and hot chocolate.
Day 3 was the start of the almost perfect day. Same deal as before with getting ready but this time we were prepared for a ride. It took a few attempts to find the right cycle hire and car park but we got there in the end. I could see a slight hill and incline and I wrongly thought Lucas would find it diffcult and moan, neither ended up being true. We rode for a bout 10 miles in total, in glorius sunshine. We had never visited Padstow before and it was nice, like St Ives just not quite as fun. The ride took roughly the same amount of time as the theme park, so we were back at Wadebridge for 1:30 - 2pm. So, we dashed home below the speed limit to get our swimming kit and head down to the beach, this time with every intention of going in the sea. Which I have to say was not that cold. My body adjusted quickly and we swam and played catch with the football and tennis ball for about an hour. Then, to dry off We headed up the beach and played football for an hour and a half. For supper we bought a couple of posh pizzas which were yummy and ate them next to the beach. Then went back for some more stone skimming. When we got back to the tent, I was shattered and had a nap and despite saying we could have one more fire, we had run out of wood. Lucas was not best pleased, he sat outside the tent on his phone talking to his girlfriend. I watched some TV on my tablet.
This morning, we had a lay-in, my inflatable bed has lost it's mojo, and deflated about 4am, so my back aches now. I am not sure what to do about that, since we are not finished camping yet. That is a Friday problem. We broke camp and everything packed away really easily, it only took an hour as I was taking my time and Lucas needed instruction at every turn but he was helpful. When we left the site, I decided to put a mental pin it and come back, when I visit these parts again. The drive to Penzance was easy, till we hit a 20 minute tail back just as we entered west Cornwall. Once at the supermarket, we got a drink and some food for dinner. Then finally headed to the arcade and blew some money. The system for playing has now changed and we had to buy a card to play the games. Lucas who is always amazing at these games won a ton of tickets. Now, this is the best part, travelling to Land's ends. Once we get to a certain point, we hit play and on comes Elbow's 'One day like this' it's our song for our Land's end adventures. I timed it so that the song ends right as we arrived at the complex and sign. This time it was spot on! We drove back up the A30 for 3/4 of a mile to the campsite and checked in to our camping pod. The next section is coming from there and the roof top garden we have.
